his warmth that is necessary for the plants to grow.
In the
winter, Rapithwin retreats to the Underworld and keeps the
subterranean waters warm so the roots of the plants will not
freeze. His character has some overlap with
dying-and-resurrection solar gods common in IE mythology.

which they say is the great one of the middle of the sky,
till just before the destroyer came was the midday (or

planet Tir (Mercury), while his peer Sataves the
chieftain of the west and the planet Anahid (Venus),
Vanand the chieftain of the south and the planet Ohrmazd
(Jupiter), and Haptoring the chieftain of the north
and the planet Warharan (Mars).
Their
leader was Gah (Rapithwin), the host of the middle of the
sky (North Star) and associated witht the planet Kevan
(Saturn). These Star-Gods seem to recall the four dwarves
that hold up the four corners of the earth in Norse
mythology, and the eight divinities that hold up the earth
in Hindu mythology. He was a co-worker of the Amesh Spenta
Haurevetat. |
